Russia’s traffic inspectors will get advanced equipment “Alkolaser” developed by the Laser Systems Company in St. Petersburg to detect drunken drivers at a distance.
An experimental model of the “Alkolaser” will be presented at the “Interpolitex-2010” show in Moscow that will run from the 26th to the 29th of October. There is no similar equipment elsewhere in the world, says the deputy head of the Scientific Research Institute for Special Techniques of the Interior Ministry, Vladimir Chernov.
“The possibility of developing such equipment appeared three years ago when our experts achieved promising results,” says Vladimir Chernov. “We developed an experimental model, which is being tested now. We hope good results will help us to develop it to meet the demands of the traffic police that assure safety on roads. The equipment will help to determine on-line whether there is alcohol vapour inside a moving vehicle,” says Vladimir Chernov.
“Alkolaser” is similar to radar. Its principle of operation is based on the use of a laser directed at a vehicle that determines whether there is vapour from 100 milliliters of Vodka or 300 milliliters of beer inside the car or not. If the “Alkolaser” detects the presence of alcohol vapour it will send details about the vehicle with the photos of its number plate to the closest traffic control unit that should determine whether the driver or a passenger has taken a drink. The equipment weighs ten kilograms, says Vladimir Chernov.
“We are going to make two models. The stationary model will be installed above the roads, while the portable one will be on a tripod and it will be controlled by a traffic officer,” Vladimir Chernov said.
The laser ray used for this purpose is absolutely harmless for health. Moreover, it is directed at alcohol vapour coming from a person in the vehicle and will not respond to spirit containing liquids such as those used for screen washing. However, after a vehicle is stopped following the information from “Alkolaser”, the driver is tested for insobriety using other methods. The Moscow Motorist Union has already expressed concern that the introduction of “Alkolaser” will create additional traffic jams. It believes that this will depend on the number of equipment that will be installed.
The developer of the “Alkolaser”, the Laser Systems Company is a leading innovative enterprise in Russia. It has been working on the world high-tech market over 15 years. Among its developments are tracking and identifying systems, vortex security systems for airports, powerful lasers and various kinds of security devices. The company is not only engaged in doing research but also offering innovative solutions from the standpoint of their practical application. Each project is implemented in the form of a ready-for-use product, which has a high demand on the market. The company plans to end tests in 2011, and then the “Alkolaser” will be produced on a large-scale for the use of Russia’s traffic police.
